World Mental Health Day 2017

What better way to support World Mental Health Day that to announce the launch of our Mental Health Resource Portal!

Most organisations in the UK will be affected by the effects of mental distress at some stage- it is estimated that at any one time, one in six workers in the UK is experiencing depression, anxiety or stress.   The Centre for Mental Health suggest that 91 million days are lost each year due to mental health problems. The Centre also calculates that the total cost to employers is estimated at nearly £26 billion each year – equivalent to £1,035 for every employee in the UK workforce.

Mates In Mind launched in February 2016 hoping to tackle Construction Mental Health. Its objective is to tackle Mental Health in Construction by getting construction talking.  Bell Group are passionate about its workforce and in looking at ways to support all health risks and especially mental health, which has for many years affected the many but been discussed and understood by the few.  Our Director of Health & Safety, Richard Wilks, is President of the Association for Project Safety (APS) he sat on the Health in Construction Leadership Group HCLG which was the founding force resulting in the Mates in Mind (MIM) Initiative.  MIM was launched early in 2016 then, in February 2017 at the Royal Institution in London over 200  Construction CEO’s signed up to take action and improve mental health in the UK. Our CEO Craig Bell was a guest at the MIM action launch this year and Bell Group are an active supporter of MIM.

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing strategy is developed to preserve, protect and promote the health and wellbeing of all our employees and those that work with us, and focusses onappointing local Health and Wellbeing representatives in every Bell Group branch. There will be a programme of internal training to implement the Mates in Mind objectives.  In conjunction with Mates in Mind, Bell Group is developing a Mental Health Resource Portal to support Health and Wellbeing representatives to ensure employees in need are signposted to internal and external support who are best placed to provide the professional guidance and support required. Bell Group are committed and are taking action by talking about Mental Health and Wellbeing.
